State Sen. Tom Goodwin is calling on Attorney General Paula Dow to conduct a “thorough investigation” of potentially fraudulent spending in the Trenton public schools that was revealed in a state audit last week.

The audit findings, which Superintendent Rodney Lofton attributed to poor monitoring of home tutors, involved a sample group of teachers whose pay and time sheets the auditors examined.

But given the possible misspending in that subgroup alone, the audit of the mostly state-funded district “has raised concerns that require further investigation,” Goodwin, R-Hamilton, said in a press release.

“The full extent of fraudulent spending by Trenton schools needs to be uncovered and corrected,” he said. “Taxpayers in districts that follow the rules can no longer afford to subsidize this waste.”

SENATOR GOODWIN ENDORSES “CAP 2.5”

State Senator Tom Goodwin (R – Mercer, Middlesex) endorsed “Cap.2.5” ahead of Governor Chris Christie’s special legislative session on Thursday. “Cap 2.5” is the legislative proposal that would require, by constitutional amendment, that local and county governments hold the line on increases in property taxes at 2.5 percent – or less – per year.

“It is time for Trenton to get serious about real property tax reform,” said Goodwin. “Cap 2.5 puts property tax decisions in the hands of the taxpayers, where it belongs. This constitutional amendment gives taxpayers the permanent reform they demand; and it gives them the direct input they deserve.”

Two Part Plan Would Dock Legislator’s Pay During a Shutdown and Ensure More Stability in Budget Planning

Senator Tom Goodwin (R-Mercer, Middlesex) issued the following remarks regarding published accounts that Governor Christie is preparing contingency plans in the event of a government shutdown. Senator Goodwin has proposed two amendments to the constitution, SCR-109 and SCR-110, to implement real change in budget development moving forward:

“Governor Christie is doing the prudent thing by preparing for the possibility of a government shutdown. Sadly, since the last government shutdown in 2006, the legislature has failed to enact strong measures to fix our broken system and to help prevent it from happening again. My fundamental goal is to keep government open so state workers can do the jobs they are paid to do and taxpayer services are not interrupted by the failings of Trenton Politicians.”
